Sportsplex or Industrial Complex? About a year ago Stephens Architectural Associates was approached to help design a “warehouse” that just might support a few indoor soccer courts. This sounded like a good project for our Tilt-Up expertise.
The long spans needed for the playing courts actually help the tilt-up walls by applying more load to the concrete…concrete loves compression. Our creative column arrangement maximized the length of the bar joists and minimized the truss girder spans to create room for 3 soccer courts and 3 basketball/volleyball courts. Stephens Architectural Associates organized the spaces along a central spine which provided circulation and viewing on two levels for each court. Support spaces are uniquely clustered at the building entry, which provide check-in and customer services. A special artificial turf provides an excellent playing surface for the soccer courts, the basketball/volleyball courts also received a durable high performance coating.
Meanwhile the owner of the building wanted to be certain that if the sports enterprise didn’t renew their lease there would be a marketable industrial facility. Stephens Architectural Associates think the sportsplex is working. The owner is comfortable with the future flexibility of our design.
